Beginner Japanese Language Level 1 class review at Tenrikyo Mission Center

The best way to review would be to share what I learn every lesson I guess! (I'll continually update this space) :D

Fun stuff on 28 Aug '16: Mid Autumn Festival cum Japanese Summer Festival potluck
Bon Odori (Japanese: η›†θΈŠγ‚Š). I never knew that Odori meant dance, until my first Bon Odori experience! And I never knew that it was a religious ceremony until I just googled it. Anyway, I was invited by my sensei. Games, food, music. What not to love?

Underwater Photography Tips for Snorkeling in Malaysia, Perhentian Islands

I really like my pictures from my latest trip so I thought I'd share my experience using a compact camera, the Canon G7X Mark II together with the WP-DC55 underwater housing during my Perhentian Islands snorkeling trip!
Green sea turtle spotted in Perhentian Islands
Coral flatlay

Quick underwater photography beginner tips to conquer the problems I faced

1. Set to underwater mode and high speed continuous shooting mode, select the best of the lot!
My first few pictures were really bad. Blur, odd colour, and badly composed. How do people freaking swim and still take nice pictures? My shortcut was to use the underwater mode and continuous shooting mode on the G7X Mark II. Underwater mode helps to correct the colour underwater, and high speed continuous shooting mode snaps multiple images at one click. I tried using the underwater macro mode but couldn't get good shots. Probably cause I couldn't hold my breath long enough to get so close. It might be more useful when diving..
Freediving just to get a decent picture

2. Go closer to the subject and take more pictures when its sunny
The further you are from the subject, whether is it corals or sea animals, the more the colours kinda disappear. I realized that my pictures also turn out exceptionally pretty when the sun is out.
In perhentian, people flock to turtles when they see them. We all get excited, but these turtles, they come up to breathe. When people flock over to them when they try to surface, they get scared and might just go back down, without breathing. It’s really bad for them, but its so hard to educate everyone about it :(
These fishes were swimming really near me so I didn’t even have to freedive to get this shot.

3. Keep your snorkel mask clear by using anti fog drops, or.. by spitting in it
I spit in my snorkel mask. Don't judge. It is annoying when my mask fogs up and when I have to wash it to see clearly.. I can't do so many things at once.

4. Post process the images to show the contrast and focus
I used to feel that its very troublesome, but I realized that there are shortcuts. Using Photoscape, you can mass edit a batch of images. It won't be perfect because every image is different, but its fast. Lightroom is a little more advanced, you can copy photo settings of an image to another, but its slightly more technical. Photoscape is free and beginner friendly. Lightroom is licensed but has a wider variety of adjustment tools. Alternatively, download images to your phone via the Camera Connect app, and then add filters on Instagram, VSCOcam, or any other photo editing app :D

5. Silicon grease the rubber parts of the case to prevent water leakage, and throw in a silica gel pack to absorb moisture
I greased the rubber parts but it wasn't enough. I think some water got in because the case fogged up after half a day. I wanted to throw in a silica gel pack but I couldn't find one, and was lazy so.. I had to suffer the consequences. Thankfully the camera still works.

Some other good-to-knows
1. Do not feed the fish to attract them. It’s nice to have tons of fish around us, but they’re capable of feeding themselves. In some touristy places, fish start biting humans because they associate us with food. Let’s try not to disrupt their natural habitat as much as we can :)
2. We don’t need fins to snorkel. Fins help to propel us quick, but for those who can’t navigate well in the water, they tend to step on corals especially in shallow waters. We have enough bleached corals and we want to continue to enjoy pretty corals.

Good Japanese Language School Review Singapore - Tenrikyo Mission Center

Probably the cheapest ($240 for half a year) centrally located Japanese language class in Singapore that I know of. As compared to JCS, Payaess, Bunka, Ikoma, or Yano this is definitely a bang for your buck. Check out the detailed course schedule in their brochure as below.

Japanese language school Singapore

Affordable Japanese course Singapore

Recently started the Beginner Japanese Language Level 1 classes in August 2016 (once a week) and I've been updating this post to review Tenrikyo Mission Center's Japanese lessons and my journey of learning the Japanese language from scratch! The once a week class is only available in August 2016 as that is the main intake. The course fee for Level 1 is $440/- for a year, separated into 2 payments.

Everyone is really friendly and I'm totally loving the vibes. Apparently they also have Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Preparation classes, Conversation classes, free Karaoke class, Japanese cooking class, and Japanese culture appreciation courses!

I have a colleague who's a current student, and another colleague who might be going down for an interview to test his proficiency for the school to gauge which level he should join. The proficiency interview is surprisingly free!

Meanwhile, you may email them at culture@tenrikyo.org.sg or call them between 2:30 to 8:30pm on weekdays and 2 to 4pm on Saturdays at 6221 4035 if you have any queries!

Free fitness classes in Singapore (HPB)

HPB worked with malls to organize free healthy living activities and when I heard about it, I packed my schedule as much as I could because those activities are classes that I would normally pay for! Activities include Zumba, Kickboxing, Hiphop, Yoga, KpopX Fitness, Bokwa, Piloxing, and Hot Hula. It is also a great way to have a free trial for these activities before deciding if you should sign up for long term classes at a fixrd studio. You can check out the updated mall workout schedule here.

Hiphop (Star Vista, walking dist from Bouna Vista MRT, Monday 7.30pm - 8.30pm)

Deck yourself in sportswear and you're ready to go! In that one hour for Hip Hop, we warmed up and went through a choreography of about 6 different moves. I felt quite retarded initially but everyone was trying to catch up so we're all in it together! Managed to do at least 95% of the moves at the end of the hour so it was great!

There are also a couple more fitness programmes from HPB which are free! There's Sunrise in the city, i-Run, Fitness at work, Sundays @ the park, and fitness interest groups. Read more and download the schedule on their website at http://www.healthhub.sg/programmes/34/get-active

I tried a couple of the free programs under Fitness at work and Sunrise in the city. It has been great so far. Go check it out! Dragged my colleagues for Yoga at Fitness first, Hip hop lessons, and Basketball near my workplace for free :D

Wasabi Tei Review - Affordable Japanese food in Orchard

Tucked away in a corner at Far East Plaza, this Sushi Bar occupies 2 separate units at the same level.

My friend shared with me that this Sushi Bar outlet is affiliated (not sure if it’s the same owner) to Chikuwa Tei. Not sure how true, but the sashimi slices are indeed as thick as, if not, thicker than at Chikuwa Tei.
Salmon Sashimi

Salmon sashimi ($12 for 6 really chunky slices)

Gyuniku Yaki Teishoku

Aburi Salmon & Unagi Maki

We also tried the Gyuniku Yaki Teishoku ($18 for a set) and Aburi Salmon & Unagi Maki ($16 for 6 pcs). The beef was alright, and as for the maki, I think Koh Grill and Bar still does it better.
Wasabi Tei Counter
With only counter seats available, it reminds me of the small restaurants in Japan.

Prices vary from $18 for an average set to $35 for a Chirashi bowl. Wasabi Tei's 2016 Menu as below. Btw, NETT price, no GST and service charge!

There weren't many food vendors but I guess we're all there for the beer!

Beerfest Asia 2016 Comedy

Rough start to the comedy. It was quite lame in the beginning really but it was okay towards the end. Wouldn't pay for it, but since we had complimentary access, why not right?

Beerfest Asia 2016 Poolball game

Ended the night with poolball. It's essentially playing pool with soccer balls instead of a stick and balls on the table. There were about 5 beer pong tables right beside this as well! Poolball was free for all, just had to write our names down and wait for our turn :) Oh. There was an area where there were dart machines free for play as well. We totally hogged the machines but made new friends along the way. Beat the high score to win a carton of beer!

Chill over live music, good food, 500 beers, and comedy with tickets starting from $25!

KFIT promo code price and review (2018 update)

** Kfit 2018 price update: Since 2017, Kfit's basic membership only allows 10 sessions per month at $129 instead of unlimited sessions at $99. Once the 10 sessions are up, its pay per use :/ Its kinda worth it if you go for the pricey classes like adult gymnastics but if you're going for stuff like zumba or kickboxing, please just.. not sign up since you can just go for the free classes HPB provides.

I am generally pleased with my experience with Kfit but recently the system was buggy and showed that I made 10 reservations, though I only made 1. I wrote an email to a lady who assisted me, and when she didn't reply, I wrote to the main email, and when there was no reply, I used the live chat. After 4 live chat sessions, the conclusion was to just wait for the lady who assisted me to reply my email though I mentioned that I was tying to book a session for the day after. I hardly am fussy but this experience really.. really.. leaves me speechless.

I was introduced to Kfit by an acquaintance and decided to sign up when there was a free 1 month trial. If you're keen, there's no longer a 1 month trial but you can use my referral code to get a small discount off your first month. The usual price is SGD129 per month which isn't too steep either!

What is Kfit?
KFit is a brand new pass that gives you the freedom to access the largest network of gyms, fitness classes, sports facilities, outdoor group exercise for a single affordable monthly fee.

The best way for you to search for a particular review here would be to Ctr-F and type the studio or activity you're looking for.

Pros
1. Try tons of different activities
2. Relatively affordable

Cons
1. Vendors might pull out and classes may be cancelled last minute
2. Kfit will charge if you don’t cancel your classes in advance (if you can’t make it)
3. Vendors will try to sell you their packages (though most of them don’t hard sell)
4. Addresses and contact numbers on kfit may be inaccurate (I got lost a couple of times)

KFIT GIM Sports Adult Gymnastics

I was stoked to see this on KFIT. I've always wanted to try gymnastics but doubted if I could really do it cause I'm like. 24 now. I'm a little old but.. thankfully there's adult gymnast. I went there with no prior experience. We did the warmup and they broke us up into several groups (prob based on how flexible we are during warm up). There were 3 of us per instructor and all 3 of us were pretty new so we worked on basic handstands, cartwheels, and just jumping on the trampoline. It wasn't too intimidating as we really started from scratch. I didn't even dare to kick up all the way to achieve the picture as above when we first started class but we really took it slow. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have already booked my next class!

*Update on my 2nd class. We practiced cartwheels and handstands and I really did get better! Tried a backwards flip practice and it was quite fun too. Even though it was my first time trying it out, it wasn't intimidating at all. I'm quite hooked now.

Wings to Wings Dance Development Centre (3 visits/ month)
- Adult ballet

I've been for adult ballet lessons at SDT where it's more syllabus based, but for Wings to Wings, it's more like an open class which I prefer. I had a great experience there really. The teacher was really friendly and clear. I felt that I actually made progress even though it was only an hour lesson cause she corrected our postures and all.

At the end of the class the owner made a short announcement and briefly mentioned that they do jazz as well, and tadaa there was an impromptu jazz trial class! She asked the instructor to give us a half an hour trial on how jazz will be like. I can't think of anything bad about my experience.. I didn't bring ballet shoes and the owner lent an extra pair to me for class.

The instructors there were really genuine and they tweaked the training routines based on my level of fitness but at the same time pushed my limits. The gym is rather basic as compared to other gyms that I've been to, nothing too fancy but it didn't bother me that much.

KFIT Stand Up paddling at Wavehouse Sentosa

Took the free buggy from the tram station to Wavehouse and went over to the paddle boarding area. It was both me and my friends first time so the instructor taught us how to get on the board and paddle. We quickly caught a hang of it and I would say we did pretty well :) Paddled for an hour and didn’t even get our upper body wet.

It was like a free and easy thing. The instructor just teaches you at the beginning and then you just go do your own stuff. He taught us a different way of paddling to turn around faster too.

I was late so everyone was kinda dispersed and doing their own thing. One of the instructors spotted that I look really lost and told me to go do my warm-ups. There wasn’t much guidance on the warmup but I can’t blame them because I was the one who was late. I caught up with the rest and it was quite alright after that.

The instructor corrected my poises and all. If it’s the first time you’re going there, you should probably attempt to go early cause the place is a maze. I got lost from the MRT station.

KFIT Dance planet Bollywood dance review

It was my first time trying Bollywood and it really wasn’t too difficult. Class started late but the teacher also extended the lesson to make up for lost time. But because class ended late, I ended up being late for my next lesson. The lady Sheema (I think she’s the owner and also the instructor) took a rather proactive approach in marketing. She texted me and my friend a day after and two days after our lesson to ask us to like their Fb page and asked if certain class timings would suit our schedules. For me I don’t really want to commit to anything just yet so yeah.

- Street jazz & Zumba

Class was fine. For both street jazz and zumba, the instructors went through the steps to make sure we got the moves. They were clear with their instructions.

Out of all the Kfit partner studios I went to, I felt the most uncomfortable here though. I walked in and there was a group of existing students who were really engaged in what they were doing, and 3 other small groups of people sitting at different corners quietly. It felt very cliquey. Anw I talked to another girl who was alone and also there for the first time so it wasn’t that bad after all.
